Kovach & Vela

A music law firm upstairs on Waterloo Rd in Cleveland, in five pages.

A concept build. I invented the business and built its site.

Drop the needle.

Drop the needle

The homepage is one pink turntable that stays in place while the copy scrolls past it on cards. Scrolling spins the platter up, swings the arm over and drops the needle, then plays side A: five bands of grooves, one for each kind of work the firm does, each with its own camera, and the band under the needle lights up while the record’s label marks the track.

Side B

When the What we handle page opens, the record lifts off the platter, turns over and sets back down label B up, and the platter starts again. Side B lists what a contract decides you keep: your masters, your publishing, your name, your share and your exits.

The record lifted off the platter and turning over, with side B’s label coming into view.

The price board

The fees are set on a felt letterboard, each plastic letter sitting a hair off. Under it, a picker answers what this would cost: pick the line closest to where you are, and it shows the fee and who reads it.

Open the sleeve

On the People page each person gets a 12-inch sleeve instead of a photograph. On a laptop each one opens like a gatefold as it comes into view, with what they have signed and played and the rooms they have worked.

The arm parks

On the booking page a record plays beside the form while you fill it in. Send it, and the arm lifts, swings back to its rest and the platter coasts to a stop.

Kovach & Vela is invented: two lawyers and a royalty analyst upstairs on Waterloo Rd in Collinwood, Cleveland. Dana Kovach played bass in touring bands for nine years, Marcus Vela booked a two-hundred-capacity room for six, and Priya Raman reads royalty statements line by line.

Its clients are bands and the venues that book them, and the whole site says one thing: send it before you sign it. Each kind of contract has a named reader and a printed fee, and the first call is free.

Every word, before you sign it.

Headlines are set in Chivo, heavy and tight, and everything you read is in Onest, which also supplies every number. The colors are a powder-coated pink, vinyl black and the cream of a record label.

This is the same homepage on a phone, top to bottom. I lay out the phone version on its own, so nothing is shrunk to fit.
